Website builder vs web designer: which is right for your business?

Wix, Squarespace or a web designer? An honest comparison of time, control, SEO and ownership, and when a website builder is the better choice.

Our honest answer

A website builder suits you if you have time, a simple offer and a small budget, and you mainly need somewhere people can check you exist.

A web designer suits you if the website needs to bring in work, especially from Google, and you'd rather spend your time running the business. Neither choice is wrong. It depends on what you need the site to do.

Website builders like Wix, Squarespace and Shopify have made it possible for anyone to put a site online in an afternoon. So why would you pay someone to do it? This guide compares the two honestly, including the cases where a builder is the better choice.

The short version

Website builder (DIY) Web designer
Who does the work You The designer, with your input
Time from you Days to weeks of your own time A few hours of meetings and feedback
Design Templates you customise Designed around your business
Writing You write everything Usually written or edited for you
SEO Built-in tools, you set them up Set up properly from the start
Ownership Your content, but the site lives on their platform Usually your files, domain and hosting
Help when stuck The platform's support articles A person you can call

When a website builder is the right choice

We'd genuinely suggest a builder if:

  • You're just starting out and not sure the business will look the same in a year.
  • You enjoy doing it yourself and have the time to write, design and keep it updated.
  • You mainly need a digital business card: your name, what you do, and how to reach you.
  • You sell products online and a platform like Shopify fits how you work.

Builders are good products. The catch is that the tools are only half the job. A template doesn't know your customers, write your service pages or decide what goes on the first screen.

When a web designer is worth it

A web designer earns their fee when:

  • The site needs to bring in enquiries. That takes the right pages, the right words and a clear path to calling you, not just a nice template.
  • You want to show up on Google for local searches. That means a page for each service, proper titles and descriptions, fast loading and structured data. Builders have the tools, but someone has to know how to use them.
  • Your time is worth more on the business. If a weekend on your website means a weekend not quoting jobs, the maths changes quickly.
  • You want to look different from competitors who are using the same templates.
  • You work in a regulated industry. Finance, legal and health businesses need the right disclaimers and wording.

What matters either way

Who owns what

With most builders you own your content, but the site itself only runs on their platform. If you leave, you usually rebuild. With a web designer, it's worth knowing up front who owns the domain and the files when the project is finished. The answer should be you.

Speed on phones

Most of your visitors are on a phone, and a slow page loses them whichever way it was built. Builder templates often carry features you don't use, and custom sites can be bloated too. Google's free PageSpeed Insights is one of the tools we use to measure it. We explain what slows sites down in why is my website slow?

Ongoing costs

Builders charge a monthly subscription. Designers usually charge for the build, and some offer a monthly care plan for hosting, security and changes. Compare what's included, not just the headline number. Our guide to what a website costs in Australia covers what drives the price.

Getting found on Google

A builder can rank well, and a custom site can rank badly. What matters is the work: a page for each service and area, clear headings, fast loading and a complete Google Business Profile. Read what is local SEO? for the basics.

Is AI replacing web designers?

AI tools can now produce a basic page quickly, and that's useful for getting started. What they can't do is talk to your customers, understand your local market, or decide what makes someone pick up the phone. The thinking behind the site is still where the value is.

What we do differently

We build custom websites for small businesses from our studio in Eight Mile Plains, Brisbane. When we take on a site, we do the parts a builder leaves to you:

  • We design it around your business, in your brand colours, not a recycled theme.
  • We plan a page for every service, so each one has its own chance to rank on Google.
  • We set up the SEO basics on every page: titles, descriptions, headings, a sitemap, structured data and Google indexing.
  • We build it for phones first and check it at four screen sizes before launch.
  • We place your licence, ABN and disclaimer wording correctly if you work in a regulated industry.
  • You own the site once it's paid for, and your domain stays in your name.

Before you commit, we can build a free draft of your homepage so you can see the difference for yourself. If a builder would suit you better, we'll tell you. Already have a builder site? Our free website health check shows what's holding it back.
