Static websites vs WordPress: speed, security and cost compared

WordPress or a static site for your business? A plain-English comparison of speed, security, cost, editing and SEO, and which suits whom.

WordPress is the most popular way to build a website, and for good reason: it's flexible, familiar and has a plugin for nearly everything. But for many small service businesses, a static website is faster, safer and cheaper to run. Here's how the two compare, without the jargon.

What's the difference?

WordPress builds each page when someone visits. A server runs PHP code, pulls content from a database, applies your theme and plugins, then sends the finished page to the visitor.

A static website is built once, ahead of time. Every page is saved as a ready-made file and served instantly from a global network. There's no database and no PHP running for each visit.

Think of WordPress as a restaurant cooking every meal to order, and a static site as a bakery with everything ready on the shelf.

Speed

Static sites are usually faster, because there's nothing to cook. Pages are delivered straight from servers close to your visitor.

WordPress can be fast too, but it takes work: caching plugins, image optimisation, good hosting and a lean theme. Many small-business WordPress sites slow down over time as plugins pile up.

Speed matters because visitors leave slow sites, especially on phones, and Google takes page experience into account.

Security

This is the biggest difference.

A typical WordPress site depends on WordPress itself, PHP, a database, a theme and often a dozen or more plugins. Each one needs updating, and an out-of-date plugin is one of the most common ways small sites get hacked. In October 2026, a critical flaw in PHP itself forced organisations worldwide to patch or take sites offline.

A static site has far less to attack. There's no login page on the live site, no database and no PHP running. Forms are handled by a separate, isolated service.

Cost

WordPress Static
Build Similar for a custom design Similar for a custom design
Hosting Needs PHP and database hosting Very low cost, often included
Maintenance Regular core, theme and plugin updates Minimal
Premium plugins Often yearly licences Not needed

Over a few years, the maintenance gap adds up.

Editing content

This is where WordPress shines. Its dashboard lets you edit pages yourself without touching code.

With a static site, content lives in simple files, and changes are made by your developer or through an editing tool connected to the site. On our care plan, small changes are done within 48 hours of your email, so most clients never need to log in to anything.

If you update your site every day yourself, WordPress may suit you better. If you change it a few times a year, static is usually simpler.

SEO

Both can rank well. Google cares about useful content, a good page experience and clear structure, not the platform. Static sites have an edge on speed and simplicity. WordPress has SEO plugins that help non-technical owners.

What matters most is that every service has its own page, every page has a unique title and description, and the site is fast on mobile. We build all of that into every static site.

Which is right for you?

Choose static if:

  • you're a service business: brokers, planners, accountants, lawyers, agents, tradies
  • your content changes occasionally, not daily
  • you want speed and security without ongoing patching

Choose WordPress (or similar) if:

  • you publish content yourself every day
  • you need complex features like memberships or a large online shop
  • you have someone to keep it updated

How we build

Every EZM website is a static site built with Eleventy and hosted on Cloudflare's global network, with forms handled by a secure Cloudflare function. It's fast, it's hard to break, and you own every file. Read more about how we work, or ask us whether static suits your business.
