You don't need a new website to get more out of the one you have. These ten checks take an afternoon, and each one can make a real difference to how many people find you and get in touch.
1. Test your site on your phone
Open your website on your phone, on mobile data rather than wi-fi. Does it load in a couple of seconds? Can you read the text without zooming? Do buttons work with your thumb? Most of your visitors see your site this way.
Fix: compress large images, remove auto-playing sliders or videos, and make sure text and buttons are a comfortable size.
2. Make your phone number tappable
On mobile, your phone number should start a call with one tap. Check the header, the contact page and the footer.
Fix: link your number with a tel: link and add a call button to the header on mobile.
3. Check every page has its own title
Search your business name in Google and look at your listings. Does each page have a clear, unique title, or do they all say "Home" or your business name?
Fix: give every page a title that leads with the service and area, like "Blocked Drains Logan | Your Business". Test it with our Google preview tool.
4. Write meta descriptions
The description is the short text under each result. Without one, Google picks text from the page, which is often unhelpful.
Fix: write about 150 characters per page: what you do, for whom, and a reason to click.
5. Make sure you have HTTPS
Look for the padlock in your browser's address bar. Without HTTPS, browsers warn visitors your site isn't secure.
Fix: most hosts offer free SSL certificates. Switch it on and redirect all pages to the HTTPS version.
6. Hunt for broken links
Click through your menu, footer and main buttons. Broken links frustrate visitors and look careless. Pay special attention to links that go nowhere, like an "About" menu item that leads to a blank page.
Fix: update or remove each broken link, and redirect any old page addresses to their new ones.
7. Update your software, or ask who does
If your site runs on WordPress or another PHP platform, out-of-date software is a real risk. The October 2026 PHP security flaw showed how quickly attackers move.
Fix: update core, themes and plugins, confirm your host runs a patched PHP version, and make sure someone is responsible for updates. Or move to a static site with nothing to patch.
8. Check your details match everywhere
Compare your business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook and directories. They should be identical.
Fix: pick one format and update every listing to match.
9. Complete your Google Business Profile
Log in and fill every field: categories, services, areas, hours, description and photos. Then send a review link to your five happiest recent customers.
Fix: follow our Google Business Profile guide.
10. Set up tracking
If you don't know how many enquiries your website brings in, you can't tell whether changes are working.
Fix: set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and track form submissions and phone clicks as conversions.
