Plenty of small businesses, especially detailers, beauty studios, tradies and cafés, get most of their work through Instagram. So it's fair to ask: why pay for a website at all?
Short answer: Instagram is a great shop window, but a website is the shop. Here's why you want both.
You don't own your Instagram account
Your followers, posts and messages live on a platform you don't control. Accounts get hacked, suspended by mistake or buried by algorithm changes. If that happens, you can lose your main source of work overnight.
Your website and domain are yours. Nobody can switch them off, and you can move them to a new host whenever you like.
Google doesn't show your Instagram for most searches
When someone searches "car detailing Woodridge" or "plumber Springwood", Google shows map results and websites. Instagram profiles rarely appear for these searches. If you don't have a website, you're invisible to people who've never heard of you.
People check you out before they book
Even customers who find you on Instagram often search for your business before booking, especially for bigger jobs. A professional website with clear prices, reviews and contact details answers their questions and confirms you're the real deal.
A website books work while you sleep
Instagram is great for conversations, but answering DMs one by one takes time. A website can do the heavy lifting:
- show packages and prices
- give an instant estimate
- take booking requests
- answer common questions
You wake up to booking requests, not twenty "how much?" messages.
They work best together
The smartest approach is to use each for what it does well:
- Instagram: show your latest work, build a following, stay top of mind
- Website: get found on Google, explain your services, take bookings, build trust
- Google Business Profile: appear in the map results and collect reviews
Link them together: your website in your Instagram bio, your Instagram feed or best photos on your website, and both on your Google profile.
What a small-business website needs
You don't need a big website. For most small businesses, a fast, mobile-friendly site with these is plenty:
- A clear homepage that says what you do and where
- Your services or packages, with prices if you can
- A gallery of your best work
- An easy way to book or enquire
- Your reviews
- Your contact details and service area
The bottom line
Keep posting on Instagram, but don't build your business on land you rent. A website gives you a home you own, visibility on Google and a way to take bookings around the clock.
